If
you and your partner think you need relationship counseling how would you
proceed? There are initially four things to consider and we will try to cover
them here.
The
first thing is to find the right marriage counselor for you. If you and your
partner agree then you could ask family or friends if they have had personal experience
with a particular counselor. This could be one way for you to find someone to
help work out your relationship issues. If no one can help then do an internet
search for relationship counselors in your area.
Next,
if you do find a counselor from people you know, from the internet or even
through a local add, check the counselor’s credentials to see if that person is
properly licensed and has the experience. Check their rate of success and how
long they have been working as a counselor.
The
third step is to talk with the counselor on the phone. You will be interviewing
them for the job of saving your relationship. Have a list of questions on hand
and try to talk with them for about ten to fifteen minutes so you can get a
feel for them. You might call this you’re beginning of your professional
relationship with them.
If
your first conversation goes well then you’re fourth step is to make an
appointment for your first session. This first session will give you the
information to see if you and your partner will continue working with them or
if you should find someone else. If your phone conversation went well then you
may expect that meeting in person will be good.
Remember
that you and your partner must both be comfortable with the counselor. If one
of you is not comfortable the counseling sessions may not work and could even
cause more problems. If this is the case it would be best to seek out another
one.
It
is true that many people are not comfortable talking about their personal problems.
Their ego would take a beating so they are happier keeping things to their
selves. Thinking people will think less of them if they find out they going to
counseling can be an issue with them when in reality this is not true.
If
one of you holds back on getting relationship counseling it would be best not
to play games with them to get them to go. But ladies if your guy is resisting
then why not find a good looking female counselor. This may be enough to get
him to attend if you are comfortable with that. It may even help him open up
more during your sessions.
